History

It is believed that the American Shorthair breed came from cats brought over by the pilgrims. They developed their unique characteristics so they could adapt to the climate. The American Shorthair lived  mainly in the northern half of the United States. These cats are strong and hardy because of the rough winters they endured. The American Shorthair really became popular in 1930.

 

Physical Appearance

The American Shorthair is an adorable breed of cat cherished by many. They are medium sized cats that are strongly built. American Shorthairs come in all colors such as white, orange, black and gray. Their fur is thick and rather hard. In addition American Shorthairs have full cheeks that you can't help but love!

Grooming

American Shorthairs don't require much grooming. Although you should brush your American Shorthair around once a week. Be careful when brushing these type of cats because it is easy to break off fur and scratch the skin. Also keep your cats nails at a manageable length by clipping them.

Feeding Requirements

Like all cats, American Shorthairs need food to stay healthy. These cats should be fed depending on their size and appetite. Some owners feed their cat dry food but you can also use moist food. Either is fine for your American Shorthair. In addition your cat's water bowl should always be filled with fresh clean water.

Personality

American Shorthairs make excellent family pets and love people. They are affectionate and very friendly. American Shorthairs get along great with dogs and other cats. They are very playful and love cat toys. Also they are often found following their beloved owner from room to room.

Lifespan

If you take good care of your American Shorthair it should live for fifteen to twenty years. So if your planning on getting an American Shorthair your looking at a long commitment. So make your decision wisely!
