Skiing was put into the first winter Olympics .  The first winter Olympics took place in 1924.  They were usualy held in January of February but couldn't always pin point it because they didn't have the technical engineering like we do today.  Now we can guarantee required conditions with the help of of the snow machines.
The two main types of skiing are Nordic and cross-country.  Skiing can also be called Langl  auf in German or de fond in French.  The Nordic skiers use long, thin skis and two long poles.     These long poles help when traveling.  Skiing has been a mode of  transportation for thousand of years.  As of now it has become a most popular sporting event.
The cross-country skiers usually set off  racing over the marked course at different lengths.  Cross-country skiing is one of the most demanding sports.  When at the top level it requires much Stamina.
Alpine, or downhill skiing gets it's name from the Alps, where this form of  skiing has been , for many years.  When downhill skiing first big, early skiiers had to climb the mountain before the could ski down it.   Downhill skiing became more popular once the ski lifts were installed at the mountain resorts to take the skiers up.  Depending on the steepness of the mountain you can often reach very high speeds which can be slowed by certain turns.
In 1924 when the first winter Olympics was held in France, the four skiing skiing events were a military patrol race; a 50km race; a ski jumping contest; and a Nordic combined event whenskiers took part in an 18-km race and ski jump
Eddie Edwards, a star with the media, and the public at the 1988 Colgary olympics, finished last in both of his  two events.  reputation followed him and the Canadian people liked him and took him into their hearts and gave him a nickname.  There was only one Alpine skiing medal given.  It was for the Alpine combined event,  when the skiers ski a downhill race and two slalom runs.  The winner was a local.  He was both slalom runs.
He then came in second on the downhill.  Norwegian Biger Ruud came in first, he lived in Garmisch and wsa well equatenced with the course.
