| Description-
Not an elegant dog at all! It's a very big dog, a big, oily, curly coat. Their coat colors range from a brown to a straw brown. There is sometimes a small spot of white on their chest area. Their outstanding ability is their talent for retrieving fallen waterfowl from the most hazardous of waters. |
| They have a very independent spirit! They usually have 3 different personalities. One is a water-going personality (they will plunge into water at anytime, work or play). Second, is endurance (a single Chesapeake had retrieved more than 200 ducks in one day). The last personality trait is their memory. | |
| Grooming-
The Chesapeake is not a dog to be all fancied up with bows. His coat is thick because that allows them to go info freezing water to retrieve things. Also their coat is very oily. It is oily and should remain that way to stay water-repellent. |
| You need to
frequently brush your dog. They have a lot of hair therefore they
shed.
Training-
When you train a Chessie you should wait until they are at least 6 months old. Usually they are introduced to water or river before 6 months. When in training you should include hand signals, and verbal commands. When the Chessie does what you commanded you should always reward them to let them know they are doing as asked. |
| When you teach them a new verbal command you much not say different things other than what you taught them. Example: "fetch" and "go get it boy!". Training is a major technique you need to help your dog with. It takes much time and patients. | ![]() |

| Care-
It must be emphasized to everyone in the family that they must take part in caring for your Chessie. Someone must feed him daily. Someone must walk him a couple times a day. Also someone must clean up if you have a puppy that still messes. |
| Someone should groom his coat, clean his ears, and clip his nails. Many children have been known to "love a dog to death" squeezing and hugging the animal in painful ways. You should teach any small children that dogs do not always like the irritation of small children squeezing them. | ![]() |

| Feeding-
It is important for a puppy to not skip a mean. If you decide to switch brands, you should add small quantities of the new brand each day. Puppies need to be fed small portions at frequent intervals, since they are growing and their active level is high. |
| Your puppy should be gaining weight steadily. However with grown dogs their growth slows down and their weight should regulate to prevent obesity. |
