There are many types of items that can be used in Diablo.  These include rings, amulets, helms, armor, weapons, shields, boots, belts, gloves, charms, along with many more.  On this page, you will learn about basic items that are needed in order to be successful.

Even among the many types of items, these items are divided even further.  There are five rankings of items, and even more classes.  The ranks include normal, magic, rare, unique, and set items.  A few of the classes would be mace, sword, and claw class.  Some of the items, like claws, can only be used by certain character classes, while some can be used by all.

             The Weapon and Shield

The weapon and the shield.  A person can carry either a weapon and a shield, two weapons, or a bow and a quiver of arrows, depending on what character class you are.  The weapon deals damage, while your shield protects you.  Some weapons, like the sorceress's orb, raise the damage done by magical attacks, rather that being used to physically attack an enemy.  All items vary in affect, and some have more attributes that others.

        The Belt

Belts, like all other items, also give special bonuses when you wear them.  Also, depending on what type of belt you wear, you can have up to sixteen places to keep potions of all kinds, and other small items one might have to use quickly.  Items are stacked in the belt, so when one is used, the item above it replaces it.  Only four items show at a time.

          The Ring and Amulet

Rings and amulets have few differences.  The biggest would be that you can wear two rings, while you can only wear one amulet.  Rings and amulets can have very large affects, ranging from enhanced attack to bonuses to your skills.  Although they aren't necessary, they prove very useful as you get further into the game.

       The Helm

Helms are the armor that you wear on your head.  Not only do they provide defense, but they can have very useful attributes also.  A lot of helm types are only for specific classes, such as wolf helms and fury visors.  These class specific items usually give large bonuses to the class that can use them.

       The Gauntlet

Gauntlets are worn on your hands.  They may have some basic affects like some other items, but  mainly they affect how you attack.  Basically, they can affect your attack speed, your life or mana steal, or your damage.  Life and mana steal is a percent of the damage that you do that goes to replenish your life.

    The Boot

Boots affect how fast you walk or run.  This can be extremely useful when you have to travel long distances.  Also, it can affect how much stamina you have, how quickly it drains, and how quickly it replenishes.  Your stamina determines how long you can run.  One changes boots often throughout the game depending on how one plays it.

    Charms

Charms are kept in your inventory.  They can have magical prefixes and suffixes.  These prefixes and suffixes determine what the charm does.  There are three types of charms: small, large, and grand.  Charms are extremely useful, and many are to be found, but they fill up inventory room quickly.

     Armor

Armor affects how often you are hit.  Other items give defense, but your body armor gives the most.  The defense on armor and its other qualities increase throughout the game, so you would also change your armor often.

    Runes

Runes only differ through name.  Their name's determine what they do.  Some items have sockets in them, and runes can be put in them to give them special affects.  If the item is a plain item of the right type with the right amount of sockets, one can put certain runes in the item in the right order to make a runeword.  Runewords have special affects along with the affects of the runes that were used to make it.

    Other Items

There are a lot of other items one can find throughout the game.  There are scrolls to identify things, or even create portals to town.  There are a lot of special items that one needs for quests, too.  The Horadric Cube is the only quest item that stays with you after you complete the quest.  It can combine items to make new ones, or alter things.  It can even create things with certain recipes.
