Mario Lemieux was born on October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Canada. His parents were Jean-Guy and Pierrette. He grew up in a French-Canadian family. Which meant he spoke French not English. He started skating at the age of five and played organized hockey at the age of six. Mario went to play in a Junior league in Quebec called Laval at the age of

 

16. During his first year at Laval, he had 30 goals and 66 assists for a 96 point season. In a later year, he scored 84 goals and finished with a 184 point season. By the time he was 17 he had NHL scouts signing him. Mario ended up getting drafted first round of the 1984 draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins

Lemieux spent his whole career playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He started his career in the 1984-85 season and is still currently playing. He also had the honor to play for the Canadian Olympic team and the NHL All-Star team. He was asked to play for these teams multiple times Mario retired after the 1996 season and returned for the 2000 season.

 

Stanley Cup Appearances

Mario Lemieux has been to several Stanley Cup Finals in his career. Lemieux’s first Stanley Cup appearance was in the 1990-91 season. The Penguins won the season and clinched The Cup. Lemieux and the Pens returned to the Stanley Cup in the 1991-92 season for back to back Stanley Cup titles. This was his last Stanley Cup appearance.

Best Season

During the season Mario had many of his career highs. During the 1988 season, Mario had his career high in goals with 85 goals. He also had his career high in assists with 114 assists. Lemieux also had his career high with his point which was 199 points. During the 1988 season, Mario Lemieux got the record for the most points in the NHL for that season.

 

Records/Awards

Mario Lemieux holds the record for the best goals per game average with .77 goals. Lemieux is also 7th in overall points throughout the NHL history. In the 1987-88 season, Mario emerged as the league’s new scoring champion, ending the seven year reign of Gretzky. He won his first Art Ross Trophy as well as his first Hart Trophy. During the 1990-91 Playoffs, Mario Lemieux scored 19 goals and had 45 points, which won his the Conne Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP and second best Playoff year ever. Mario was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease and made a comeback in the 1992-93 season, winning the scoring title with 69 goals and 160 points in just 60 games. Lemieux also won his first Lester B. Pierson Award, his second Hart Trophy, and his first Masterton Trophy for perseverance and dedication.
