A
new puppy should be feed three times a day. Fresh water should be
available at all times for your Maltese. From six months to 1 year
for age, the puppy should remain on puppy food but the feedings should
be decreased to twice a day. When a dog reaches one year of age,
they should be switched to an adult maintenance diet. The number
of feedings can remain at twice a day but some owners prefer to feed
their dog one large meal a day. Your dog should have a place of
his or her own to eat with out disturbance. Give the dog a
definite period of time to eat their food rather than allowing them to
nibble through out the day. If the food has not been eaten in 10
minutes, pick it up and do not feed until the next mealtime. Human food given to a dog can lead to weight gain. This can also destroy the nutritional balance of the dog food. Some human foods feed in large quantities can lead to intestinal problems. The amount of food an adult Maltese eats daily will vary according to the size of the dog, activity level and how much time is spent outside. Determine how much food keeps your adult dog looking and feeling their best. Then decide how many meals you want to feed with that amount. Most dogs love to eat and offering two meals a day is more enjoyable for them. If you’re worried about over feeding, make sure you measure the food correctly. |
