Basic Facts
Algeria has about 26 million people, and the country's growth rate is 2.7 percent. Algeria has also become a political leader for Africa. It also has problems in economic progress since they gained independence from France in 1962. Algeria goes from the Sahara Desert to the Mediterranean Sea.
    
                    The People
The life efficacy for men is 71 years and for girls it's 74 years. The religions are Sunni Muslim (state religion) 99%, and Christian and Jewish are both 1%. Arabic is the official language there, but they also speak French and Berber dialects. Out of the total population only 70 percent can read. Males are78.8% and Females are 61%. 
              Government
The government type is republic. The capital of Algeria is Algiers. The national holiday there is Revolution Day November 1st (1954). The president there is President Abdelaziz BOUTEFLIKA (since 28 April 1999). The head of the government there is Prime Minister Ahmed OUYAHIA (since  May 2003). Presidents there are elected for a 5 year term by a popular vote.
