Although
genetically modified foods are currently labeled in Canada and Europe the
United States has yet to label there foods so that the American people
know are ingesting.
Consumers
in Canada and Europe know what they are buying at the point of purchase.
In the United States however we do not receive that information.
There are toll free numbers on some packaging, however this
does not help when purchasing. Animals
that are genetically modified are not labeled in the United States as well
as Canada and Europe. A study
shows that only about 60% of Americans know that that they are eating
genetically modified foods. If
foods were labeled as genetically modified it would at least get people
wondering what they were eating and they would be curious to find out more
about genetically modified foods. One
reason that food isn’t labeled is that companies are more concerned with
profit and don’t want to commit to labeling.
With proper labeling the decision to consume a genetically modified
food becomes the consumers, not the corporations.
