George Roger Waters, (known as Roger Waters), was born on September 6, 1943, in Surey, Great Britain.  His childhood was struck with tragedy when his father was killed in World War II.  Roger spent his childhood with his Mother and older brother.  In his early twenties, while attending college, he formed a band named Sigma 6.
The band consisted of Richard Wright, Nick Mason, Clive Metcalf, and himself.  This band wasn’t very good, so their manager quit.  After this Clive left the band and Syd Barrett joined them. Then they were on their way to becoming Pink Floyd.
In the beginning Syd was the driving force of the band, but he only stayed a couple of years.  After Syd left, Roger became the main influence of Pink Floyd.  Even though Syd’s influence was still heard, it was clear that Roger was writing in his own style, and he was clearly steering the group’s future.  Pink Floyd had a very successful career under Roger’s leadership, including several albums that have become classics today.
After eleven long years of touring, the rock star life style took its toll on Pink Floyd.   The band members stopped being friends, and Roger began to resent the wild way that his fans would act when Pink Floyd was giving a concert.  After one really bad concert where drunken fans were throwing bottles onto the stage, Roger was inspired to write Pink Floyd’s most successful album, The Wall.  Roger had begun to write most of the songs for Pink Floyd by himself and was ready to go onto a solo career.  The remaining band members wanted to continue to make records as Pink Floyd.
Roger Waters sued to stop them from doing this because he felt that he was Pink Floyd and they should not be allowed to use the name.  The court felt differently and Roger lost the law suit.  Roger’s career after leaving Pink Floyd was off to a slow start, because people didn’t know who Roger Waters was without the Pink Floyd name.  However, Roger is very talented and has continued with his career. In 2005 he is expected to release an album that is predicted to be his most successful yet.
