The Golden Retrievers coat has a natural shine to it; a small amount of grooming will maintain the coats beauty. Since it is a hunting dog, you must keep its coat clean and in good condition. After a dog has been hunting on land you should always check their coat and paws for burrs, they are not easy to remove so you must separate the hairs around them to avoid pulling out the dog's fur. You must make sure the coat has no tangles or knots by brushing it with a comb and/or brush. A little grooming will keep the dog's coat shiny and very healthy. If the dogs has been playing in water it is important to wash him off with a hose or in the bathtub, also you must check your dog for flees and ticks during flee and tick season. If your Retriever hunts you should buy flee sprays, powders, or get a flee dip weekly to protect your dog from getting eaten away by those nasty flees and ticks. |

Proper feeding requires a responsible and educated owner. The importance of your dogs muscle and bone growth could not be anymore important. A little after your puppy comes home to live with you, it will need to be fed; you should ask the seller what kind of foods were given to the puppy and stay with that diet until it gets a little older. If you prefer to switch to another brand of dog food, everyday begin to add more and more quantities of the new brand to the usual food. Make the portions of the new food increasingly larger until the puppy is unattached from its former diet. |

What should you feed the puppy and how often should you feed it? |

Puppies need to be fed small servings at an everyday time, since they are growing fast and their activity level is high. You must make sure that you puppy gains weight little by little; with an adult dog growth slows down and weight has to keep up to stop obesity and a lot of other problems. At one time it was thought that people food was the answer with daily supplies of meat, egg yolk, veggies, cereal, and cheese, brewer's yeast, and vitamin supplements. With the entire nutritionally complete commercial dog food products willingly available, these extended preparations really are pointless now. |

Since there are so many varieties of dog foods today there's something made for everyone's pet. Pet shops offer a wide range of dog bowls that are colorful, useful, and affordable. It is an EXCELLENT idea to give your dog a chew bone and/or a chew toy. The safest and most suggested chew bone is the Nyla-bone. |

| If your Retriever is an inside dog, a dog bed in the corner of your family room will do. You could also invest in a crate for it to call "home" whenever it needs to be confined for a short period of time. |

If your Retriever is an outside dog you may want to buy or build a dog house. These are often made out of wood. They should be sturdy and give enough room for your dog to stretch out when it sleeps. Using a crate isn't always a cruel thing to do to your dog. If it is used correctly, a crate can restrict your dog when it is in convenient to have the dog running around the house (when no one is home, guests are over, or enjoying a family meal.) No matter where your dog lives you should always keep its surroundings clean. Its waste should be removed everyday from its home. |

reasonable diet and a trip to the vet are good ways to keep your
Retriever healthy, but so is exercise. It is a great idea for you to
exercise with your dog. It builds a closer relationship and keeps you
and your dog healthy. Many pet shops will have a Nylon Disc that has a
bone on the top of it. The benefits of a Nylon Disc is that with an
ordinary Frisbee a dog may not be able to grip it in it's mouth when it
lands, but with the Nylon Disc it becomes easier to grab because of the
molded bone on top. |

| You want your dog to be welcomed by everyone; this won't happen if it is urinating in every room and barks all night long. Your dog needs training in the correct forms of behavior in this brand new human world. You can't expect your dog to become perfect over night. You must take time and train your pet. A successfully trained dog can be taken anywhere and behave well with anyone. In fact, it is that one word - training - which can transform an aggressive dog into a loving, peaceful, well-behaved dog. Your Retriever should get used to wearing a collar and leash as soon as possible. Always have an identification tag on the collar. You should also teach your dog to obey commands. That way you will have an obedient dog. |

Since the Golden Retriever hunts it is very likely that it will swallow a foreign object, or poison. To prevent your dog from swallowing these foreign objects you can give your dog "chew toys." If your dog swallows poison it must be treated as soon as possible because any delay could cause death. Always have an experienced, smart, and caring vet for your little furry friend. | ||
| If you own a female dog and you want to breed her first make sure you can handle the responsibility of caring for her and her puppies. You are responsible for raising her pups until good homes can be found for them. A whelping box gives the female a safe place to deliver her puppies. Let her get used to the box several days before delivery. Also prepare her for delivery and make her as comfortable as possible. |
