| The Basset Hounds we see today in dog shows, tracking trials, and as a family pet are smooth-coated dogs of true “hound color”--- tan, white, and black--- scattered over the body in no pattern. However, there is another type of Basset Hound besides the smooth-coated; that we see or hear about, but in France and other countries there is a rough-coated Basset, or “Basset Griffon.” |

There are many differences between a rough and smooth Basset. The Smooth Hounds are true hounds, as they have the clear bell-like voice of a true Basset Hound. They hunt with their noses to the ground, following a trail of what they smell. The Rough Hounds hunt in a manner more like a Terrier would. The Roughs are not as steady as the Smooth Hounds are. They also don’t have a loud bell-like voice. The Roughs tend to have longer legs than the Smoothes, which makes it harder for them to keep their nose to the ground for a long period of time, but they can move faster. |

| Try to feed your dog around the same time each day and in the same place so it will get used to its daily routine and have good eating habits. Some "people food" can be offered to your dog occasionally, but never give your dog human "junk food" like cake, candy, chocolate, soda, and other snack foods. If you are ever in doubt about what kinds of food and how much of it your dog can eat ask your vet. Always rinse out your dogs bowls every month with water and soap to make sure your dog stays healthy. |

It is a good idea to get your Basset a nice warm bed to relax and sleep in. Make sure it fits the size of your dog because dog beds come in many different sizes. Also, when buying a bed think about how big your dog will be once it has reached its full-grown size. Since Basset Hounds like to lie around make sure it gets enough exercise. You could play catch or play tug-o-war to keep your Basset Hound skinny and healthy.

| It’s a good idea to train your Basset Hound if it hunts. You don’t want it to run off and not follow your commands. You should buy a choker collar to train your dog to stay by your side. Teach your dog what "sit!", "stay!", "heel!", "come!" and "down!" mean. If your dog doesn’t obey do not threat or physically punish your dog. That will not help your dog obey you. Rewarding your dog will. |

Puppies and young dogs need something with resistance to chew on while their jaws and teeth are developing rawhides are very good for that. Many dogs love rawhides. They are easy to find and they come in different sizes, shapes, flavors, and types. They are usually made out of pigs, cows, horses, and other animals. Since dogs can’t wake up in the morning and brush their teeth you can buy them a Guma-bone to prevent tartar and plaque build-up. Nyla-floss is a product that is made to save dogs teeth and to keep them healthy also. It will prevent gum disease and clean between teeth. All you have to do it play a nice game of tug-o-war for it to be affective.

One of the biggest complaints about a dog’s behavior is barking. The question is can you get rid of the bark? Yes!! For example, the dog that barks hearing the command "speak!" is sometimes rewarded with a treat or a nick backrub. If the dog is never rewarded again when it barks after being told to "speak!" it will eventually stop this type of barking. This is the process of extinction and it implies that the behavior must be repeated but not rewarded again.
