Footwear, believe it or not is a very important part of football.  NFL players need sturdy, supporting footwear to withstand the pounding of a game.  Football shoes worn on grass surfaces are know as cleats, after the screw in plastic studs on the bottom of the shoe.  The cleats help a player big into the turf for a strong forward push at the line.

Many football players use gloves.  Offensive linemen often wear padded gloves.  Recievers and Runningbacks sometimes wear thinner gloves that give them a good feel for the ball.  In todays NFL quarterbacks are among the few players who do not wear some type of glove.

The most obvious piece of equipment is the helmet.  It also is the most important piece of safety equipment becuase it protects the player's head and face from the collisions and contact that occur throughout a game.  NFL today combine high tech plastics, inflatable form fitting air bladers, and a multitude of ajustable straps to creat the safest helmet possible.

After World War Two, strong and lightweight plastic materials were developed that changed the way players were protected.  Shoulder pads became lighter and more flexible, yet safer that before.  Foam padding replaced cotton stuffing, reducing weight while increasing strength.  The shoulder pads protect the shoulders, chest, back, and neck.

An NFL player's uniform number is the real way to tell who he is.  The earliest football uniforms were simple scarves or clothes worn around a player's waist.  As teams were being formed they made their jerseys out of heavy wool.  Today's NFL uniforms are made from strong, lightweight, colorful fabrics decorated with some of the most recognized logos and numbers in sports.

Another great piece of equipment to make you more comfortable during football is Under Armour.  It is designed to make your feel cool in the summer and warm during the winter.  It comes in all shapes and sizes and really is very comfortable to wear.
