| Bill Cower is the longest tenured coach with one team in the
NFL. He's also the NFL's most successful coach. In the 12 seasons Bill
Cower has been with the Steelers, they have gotten 7 division titles, eight
postseason playoff berths, advanced to 4 AFC Championship games, and made
one Super Bowl appearance. In 12 seasons Cower has missed the playoffs
only four times. In his first six seasons, he joined Paul Brown as
the only head coach to lead a team to six straight trips to the playoffs
in his first six seasons as head coach. 1998 was the first Bill Cower
didn't make it to the playoffs.
In 1995, the Steelers led the AFC in scoring with 407 points and set eight new offensive team records. In 1996, the Steelers didn't do as well in the Super Bowl as in the previous season, but Bill Cower did a much better coaching job. Throughout the season the Steelers had to deal with14 starters missing 64 starts because of injury. Cower had to play 40 different starters throughout the season, and they still made it to the Super Bowl. Cower's 2000 season could possibly have been one of his greatest coaching performance. They had a 9-4 season enough to keep them in the playoffs until the last game of the regular season. The lost the game and their shot at the playoffs. |
