The sport of volleyball was founded by William G. Morgan. Morgan was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Holyoke, Massachusetts William Morgan wanted to blend basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The men there wanted something that would give them exercise with less physical contact than basketball. He took the idea of a net from tennis. However he put a twist on it and raised the net up to where it is now. Originally Volleyball was called Mintonette. |

However during a game Morgan couldn't help noticing how the ball was volleying over the net. He decided then that Mintonette was not the best name for it. Thus bringing the name Volleyball into action. Before Volleyball was invented people had no sports to play in the winter that were both competitive and requiring teamwork. | ![]() |
| Volleyball was the perfect solution. Since volleyball was made in a YMCA it was quickly spread to the other YMCA’s around the country. Soon it was spreading into colleges, high schools, and even factories. This is an abnormal thing though. Because Volleyball was originally intended for older men. In the factories it became a very popular lunchtime sport to play. During World War I Soldiers brought it to Europe and spread it around the world quickly after that. | ![]() |
| It became an Olympic sport. Its no wonder every one of all ages loves to play Volleyball. It’s exciting and it suits everyone’s needs. Originally when girls played Volleyball they would never dive or roll on the ground to get the ball. However they did get their energy out by playing and it is still as common today as it was all the way back then. Even though originally a men’s sport it quickly was made for women as well. Now today there are one thousand, two hundred colleges that field women’s Volleyball, and of that one thousand, two hundred colleges only sixty of them offer men’s teams. | ![]() ![]() |
