The first cheer pep club was established in the 1870’s. Shortly after that in the 1800’s the first organized yell was recorded at Princeton University. The usage of the megaphone because very popular in the early 1920’s. In the late 1920’s women and men both became very active in cheerleading. Cheerleading was recognized as a serious athletic sport in the early 1930’s. In the 1980’s the first national cheerleading competition was held. |

Cheerleaders began to cheer for several sports including basketball, wrestling, track and field, swimming, and baseball. Today most cheerleaders cheer for two well-known sports, basketball and football. Some rare sports you will see cheerleaders cheer for are volleyball, softball, and rugby. There is usually a halftime show put on by the cheerleaders. They show a cheer and a dance or any other exciting stunts. |

College cheer squads began in the late 1960’s. In college you have to try out to be on there competing squad. College cheerleaders organize everything themselves. There is not a coach in cheerleading there is only a captain and a co. captain. |
