Jack Nicklaus was born Sunday, January 21, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio. Jack has been considered a legend to the game of golf for the past 30 years. Jack was always bonded to sports even in his youth. He admired his father most of anything though. This helped shape his golf career most of all. Jacks fathers name was Charlie, and he took up the game of golf in 1950. |
| This was because he was forced to give up more strenuous sports because of an ankle injury. Eventually, Charlie wasn’t able to carry his clubs anymore because of his ankle acting up, so he asked Jack to carry them for him. Jack was delighted at this chance to spend more time with his dad. When his father rested between holes, Jack would hit shots with a club that was cut down to his size. He became really good by doing this. |

The first time Jack ever kept score playing golf he shot a 51 for 9 holes. Because of his amazing talent and feel for the game, Jack’s dad enrolled him in classes at Scioto Country Club, where his family belonged. There, Jack met a professional named Jack Grout. Nicklaus had said “If Jack had not arrived at Scioto concurrent with my father’s convalescence; right now I would probably be selling insurance Monday though Friday and flipping a fishing rod for my weekend fun... I am certain my life overall would have been very different from what it became.” Jack Grout gave him private lessons for no charge and helped him develop his game until he died in 1989.
