Butterfly is probably the hardest stroke to do.
Some people really like it and are good at it. On the other hand some
people are really bad at it and hate it.
. |
| The butterfly technique is “hips go up,
and hands go in.” if your timing is off, then your whole stroke is
messed up. The kick for butterfly is a dolphin kick, and there is two
kicks per stroke.

Backstroke is obviously on your back, unless you
are doing a flip turn. The stroke is an alternating with your arms, and
your kick is a flutter kick. This stroke is exactly like freestyle but
it is on your back.
|
|
In backstroke you have to roll your
shoulders, or you look very stiff and you can’t really swim it. While
you swim backstroke should look nice and smooth and connected.

Breaststroke is a stroke where you breathe every stroke. When you kick in breaststroke, your legs are like frog legs. Your arms make a circular motion to pull you along in the water. |

Free style is the most common stroke.
Usually at practices, you mostly do all freestyle. Mostly everyone is
good at freestyle, and it is one of the easiest strokes.
|
| While doing free, your arms alternate back and forth and you pull that water along. Kicking for freestyle is just a little flutter kick | ![]() |

A Flip turn is when you are at the end or the length, and you need to turn around at the wall. So you do a summersault and it all works out and you push off the wall with streamline. This takes a lot of practice to be able to do it. |
Starts
| At the beginning of your race, you have to dive off of the starting block. The official says, "Take your mark. GO!" you bolt off of that block so fast and start your race! | ![]() |
