-Cheerleading, how it all began

 

                                    Cheerleading didn’t just evolve out of nowhere; it started back in the late 1880’s.  Cheerleading has not yet stopped evolving, and who’s to say it is.

 

1870’s - The first known pep club created at Princeton University. 

1880’s - First known cheer created.  

1920’s - Gymnastics becomes included in routines, also women started to participated in the formerly all male sport.  

1930’s - Paper pompons were first used.  

1940’s - Cheerleading became mainly an all female sport.  

1948 - Lawrence R. Herkimer started the National Cheerleaders Association, (NCA), in his hometown of Huntsville, Texas  

1949 - Lawrence R. Herkimer organized the first cheer camp at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  

1960’s - the first vinyl pom-pom is used.  

1976 - Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders’ perform at Super Bowl X  

1977 - CBS television network broadcasts the collegiate cheerleading championships  

1980 -  The first cheerleading competitions are established.  

2000 -  The inaugural World Cheerleading Competitions are held.  

20012001 -  Competitive cheerleading is the fastest growing girls sport in the US as many as 400,000 cheerleaders attend cheer camp each year  

20042004 -  Hermann Engles from Wayn State University finds that competitive cheerleaders are in the same physical league as many Olympic soccer and gymnastic competitors.
