Arcade

The arcade genre was the first style of gaming. Many Nintendo games originated from these masterpieces. Some games that you may still find in an arcade are Pac-Man, Pong, and Super Mario Bros. This is the easiest genre to start playing cold turkey in my opinion. |

Platformer

Platformers are probably the
easiest games to recognize. The basic goal in platformers is to jump
from platform to platform, avoiding the bottomless pits, beat the boss,
then do it again and again on different levels. Some good platformers
are Mario and Sonic games. Almost any person has at least one platformer. |

RPG
| RPG stands for “role playing game.” Signs of this genre are intense storylines, customization, weapons such as swords and axes, and magic. These are the best kind of games in my opinion. Some games in this genre are the highly respected Final Fantasy series, the Fire Emblem series, and almost any game made by Square Enix. | |
Strategy

Strategy is another good example of another good game genre. Many strategy games on the GBA are also RPGs. Strategy games make you use your mind and reflexes very often. Good examples of strategy games are Dr. Mario, Tetris, Pokemon, and Fire Emblem. Fans of racing and sports genres probably won’t get much out of this type of game. |

Racing

Racing is an enjoyable genre that you could pick up with no experience and have a fun time. Two classic games in this genre are the F-ZERO series and the Mario Kart series. If you want an enjoyable game that you could spend hours playing, you’d like a racing game. |
Shooter
![]() |
The shooter genre is a more
difficult and intense genre than most others. You need quick reflexes
and good aiming to hit your intended target. Some shooter games are the
Metroid Prime series and the Tom Clancy’s series. I suggest that you
don’t buy a shooter game unless you are ready for the challenge. |
