The First Corvette.....

Corvettes were a big turn in the car era. Harley Earl got the credit for the creation of the corvette, a prototype that was created in 1951. The prototype was called "Project Opal", then soon it was changed to Corvette, named after a type of warship. These warships chased submarines in World War II. The first corvette was shown in 1953 at the Motorama Car Show in New York.  The cars code name was Ex-122, but was already known popularly as the Corvette

Finally on June 30, 1953, the first corvettes started to be sold. Only three hundred cars were built for that day and they were all white with a sportsman- red interior. It reached a speed of 108 miles per hour, had a V8 engine called the Blue Flame, six cylinder, and it has 150 horsepower. Although the Corvette was high in stats, it still wasn't beating it's competitor the Ford Motor Companies Thunderbird.

The Need For Speed.....

Since the Corvette was first created to be a racecar, the need for speed went sky high. The original Corvette was fast, but definitely not fast enough. In 1993, LT-5 Corvette was released. It's engine managed to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds. With 405 horsepower (the unit for measuring the power of engines, motors, etc.) the Corvette was top of the line.

The Competition.....

The Corvette was gaining popularity and power everyday. This attracted even foreign competitors to the ring. Rivals trying for the title included Muntz Jet, Nash-Healey, Kaiser Darrin, Dual-Ghia, the A.C Cobra, Shelby Mustangs, Jaguars, various XK's, and the Porsche. Very good competition, but none came close to the sales and volubility of the Corvette to the Americans.
