Being a Ventriloquist

BEING A VENTRILOQUIST!

Scriptwriting

Like I said, buy your jokes!!  But if you want to write your own dialogue, be sure to know what type of audience you will be performing in front of.  Always make sure your jokes are funny and not rude.  Also make sure you are having fun.  If you aren’t, who will?

Memorizing and Practicing the Script

There are several methods of memorizing a script, but I am only going to mention one.  Read your script three times.  Try to remember the topic of your script.  Each day read through your script and make mental notes starting from the main topic of the script to the small jokes.  After you memorize the script, it is time that you practice it.  Look in the mirror and perform it.  Make sure you have some kind of a puppet with you.  Practice it several times without moving your lips.

Publicity

How do you get famous?  Put an ad in the newspaper or send fliers.  Anything like that will work.  Example ad:  Ventriloquist for hire.  Does birthday parties or special events.  Contact Chris Hooz at 412-555-5555.  Make sure you include your name, what you do, and your phone number.

What would you do?

Now that you are a good ventriloquist, do you want to become rich or make people in hospitals laugh?  The choice is yours.  In this part of Ventriloquism Basics for Beginners, I can’t help you.  It is your choice.

The Audience

Some crowds might laugh at your jokes, but want happens if you walk on stage and everyone is bored and won’t laugh at your jokes?  What should you do?  Just continue with your script and have fun.  If you do, the audience will also.

Record Keeping

As you perform, more people will ask you to return and you might not remember which jokes you told.  You don’t want to tell the same ones again.  So you need to keep a record book handy.  After you perform, write the following information in a journal:

1.      The record number (Is this your first or 300th performance?)

2.      The phone number of the contact

3.      The scripts you used

Always have your record book ready!
