The Masters is the first major PGA tournament of the year. It is held at Augusta National Golf Club each time it is held. It is played Easter Weekend, and once you win you receive a green jacket. You can return every year as long as you'd like, no matter how good or bad you did that year.
The US Open is the second major tournament of the year. It is always played in the middle of June. They rotate the courses to be played every year. A beautiful trophy is awarded to the winner, as well as a large cash prize. |

The British Open is the third major tournament of the year. It is played in the middle of July. The courses rotate between Scotland, England, and Ireland. Just like the US Open, you receive a trophy and a large cash prize.
The PGA championship is the fourth major tournament of the year. It is held in the middle of August. The courses rotate within the best courses of the United States. The winner receives "The Wannamaker Trophy."
The U.S. Amateur is also considered a major tournament. It is for amateurs only. Amateurs are golfers who are not yet professional. It is open to all Amateur Golfers across the United States. You have to qualify to be able to play in this tournament. The U.S. Amateur is played at various courses across the country. The U.S. Women's Amateur in 2004 was held at the Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The Ryder Cup is a tournament played every other year. It is rotated between the United States and Europe. It is a team competition. The Ryder Cup is made up of the twelve best golfers from the United States and Europe. The winning team will receive the Ryder Cup which is a symbolic trophy. There is also a tournament for the women. All of them are amateurs. It is called "The Curtis Cup." |
