There
are some major items that have to do with the
rinks. They are the zamboni,
the boards, the benches, the penalty box, the lines, the net, and the
scoreboard. Once you know
where everything is, it is a piece of cake to understand why it is there. |

Zamboni The
zamboni helps to take care of the ice surface.
What it does is it scrapes off the surface of the ice, and it puts
water down in place of what it scratches off.
This eventually freezes and makes a smooth ice surface.

Boards The
boards serve the purpose of making a boundary of where the game is played,
and a wall where people can’t pass so that the players can not get into
the audience, and pucks can’t either. |

Benches The benches serve
the simple purpose of giving a place to rest and store extra players(
since only 5 players and a goalie can be out on the ice at one time),
coaches, and equipment. They
are off to the side of the ice surface and have a door to get out onto the
ice. |

Penalty Box The penalty box
serves the main purpose of storing the players that have committed
penalties. Also, usually
between the penalty boxes is the score box.
There are people in here that control the scoreboard. |

Lines There
are 5 lines on the ice but there are only 3 different types.
There are 2 goal lines, 2 blue lines, and 1 red/center line.
The red line marks center ice.
The blue like marks the boundary between the two offensive zones
and the neutral zone, and the goal lines mark the line in which the puck
must cross into the net to be considered a goal.
|
The Net The net serves a very simple purpose. It is what you have to get the puck into to score a goal. It is made of metal and mesh. |
Score board The scoreboard is a valuable part of the rink. It shows the score, the period, how much time is left in the period, and any penalties that are being served. |
