To play ice hockey you must wear a lot of equipment.  You must have skates, knee pads, pants, a cup, elbow pads, shoulder pads, a helmet, a neck guard, jersey, gloves, socks , and a stick.

Skates

Skates are the most useful piece of equipment.  Without them you would not be able to skate.  These go on your feet like shoes.  They have blades on the bottom commonly made of steel, and they  can be sharpened.

Knee Pads

Knee pads are very important pieces of equipment.  They go on your shins and protect your lower leg.  They are usually plastic with padding where they touch your leg.  Hockey socks usually go over top of these.

Pants and Cup

Pants along with a cup are very protective.  Pants go on your upper leg, and protect your thigh to the bottom of your midsection.  Also, under your pants, you should always wear a cup to protect your privates.

Elbow Pads

Elbow pads come in very handy at many times while playing ice hockey.  They go on your elbows and protect them.  A lot of times when you fall backwards you hit your elbows, so elbow pads prevent injury when that happens.

Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads are a very nice thing to have when you smash someone into the boards. They go on your shoulders and protect you when you check someone or get checked by someone, and when you fall.  They kind of break your fall a little bit.  They should come down to the top of your pants.

Helmets

Helmets are the most important part of equipment.  It goes on your head and protects it.  They are very useful when you get in a fight, fall, or get checked.

Neck Guard, Jersey, and Socks

Your neck guard goes around your neck and protects it from sticks, pucks, skates, etc.  Your jersey is one of the ways to distinguish teams.  It goes over your shoulder pads, and elbow pads. Your socks are another way to distinguish between teams.  They go over your knee pads, and reach from under your pants to the top of your skates.

Gloves

Gloves go on your hands and protect them from pucks, other sticks, skates, etc.  They come in handy when you have the puck, and someone from the other team takes a whack at your hands when you shoot the puck.

Sticks

Your stick is an excellent piece of equipment.  There are all different kinds of them.  Composite, wood, and two piece, your stick serves the main purpose of helping you control the puck.
