Domestic cats (house cats) have evolved from many different types of wild and jungle cats. Scientists have tested and proven the DNA structure of some of the domestic cats and seen that they are related (indirectly). In Ancient Egypt, cats were worshipped along side the Goddess Bast. As time went by though, cats were given a bad reputation from the false Christian accusations against the Pagan religions. With the role of rat killers in the Black Plague, they regained some status. |

In Ancient Egypt, the killing of a cat was punishable by death. The king of Persia (present Iran) had his soldiers attach cats to their shields in 522 B.C., thus having won the war; the Egyptians couldn't bare hurting the felines and just dropped their weapons. During the 15th Century, the Pope (Innocent VIII) ordered the war on witchcraft. Cats were burnt along side their masters after being tortured. Centuries later this ceased (thank goodness!). Throughout history the cat has been both persecuted and venerated. In recent years, cat competitions (kind of like beauty pageants... only with cats), have become more popular. |
