THE MAN BEHIND IT ALL

Bill Cowher has been head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 13 years. During those thirteen years, he has never won a Superbowl, although he made it four times.  He is ninth in the NFL for the longest time as head coach of a team.

 

In thirteen years as head coach, Cowher lead the Steelers to the playoffs nine times. In his first six years as head coach, he made it all six times. With a winning percentage of over 500, he has a total record of 140-86-1. In 1995, Cowher lead the Steelers to their only Superbowl appearance with him as head coach, and they ended up losing. Cowher started his coaching of the Steelers on January 21, 1992, just 26 days after the retirement of head coach Chuck Knoll. During the 1992 season, Cowher was named the NFL's coach of the year. Cowher's coaching career started in 1985 as an assistant coach of the Cleveland Browns.

GROWING UP

William Laird Cowher was born on May 18, 1957, in the Crafton area west of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Carlynton high school where he excelled at football and track.  After graduating, he went to North Carolina State. He was a three year starter at linebacker there. After college, he signed with the Cleveland Browns. 

AS A PLAYER

 

Bill Cowher was a linebacker and a special teams standout with the Cleveland Browns. He played for the Browns for five years. Cowher sat out in 1981 due to a knee injury. In 1982, he returned as team captain. Prior to the 1983 season, Cowher was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1984, he ended his career with another knee injury. After that, he went back to Cleveland to coach the Browns.
