Holstein- Holsteins are basically the typical cow.  They are white cows with big black spots.  The cows' average height is 4¾ feet.  They usually weigh about 1500 pounds.  Holsteins can be found in nearly every barnyard.  Their working lifespan is about 6 years and they need lots of attention.  The Holstein breed is believed to have come from the Netherlands, but the breed is so old that no one knows for sure.
Brown Swiss- The Brown Swiss is a mostly light-brown cow with a docile nature.  The cows usually weigh about 1,400 pounds and are 4¼ feet tall.  Brown Swiss is second only to Holstein in total milk yield, but has very rich milk.  The breed originated in Switzerland (duh).  It is one of the oldest bovine breeds.  It was once used primarily for beef, until people tasted its rich buttermilk.
