The Chinese Shar Pei comes from China. It is mainly a family pet. |

They grow to be medium size with a shoulder height of 18 3/4 in. to 22 3/4 in. The average weight is 38 1/2 lbs. |

The Shar Pei can have two types of coats. There is the horsecoat, which is very hard, short, and bristly. |

The second variety is called the brushcoat and has longer hair. Some dogs are black, red, brown, or fawn. Multicolored and white dogs exist but are not desired as show dogs. They have blue tongues and blue pigment. |

The Shar Pei has lots of loose folds of skin all over its body. Puppies have especially loose skin. Their skin has to be checked often and cleaned when necessary. |

Their tail lies very close to their body and it needs to be checked and cleaned often to prevent infection. They need eye drops when necessary and should be groomed with a soft brush. |

Shar Pei dogs are loyal, playful, dominant, active, and brave. They have quite a strong character and are very intelligent. They do not always follow orders because of their intelligence and they are reasonably vigilant. |

To train this dog, you need to be very consistent or they will try to take over. You must not be inconsistent, uncertain, soft, or lenient in the dogs eyes. This dog needs a confident handler. |

This dog gets very attached to its family, but isn't unfriendly to strangers if they are socialized right. They are usually fine with other animals if they are raised with them but there is always the chance of a fight with another dog. |

Shar Peis need lots of exercise. If they get enough exercise, they will be good inside. |
