High School-Swann went to Serra High School in Foster City. He was an All-American football player, and he also excelled at track and field, winning the California high school long jump championship. He was heavily recruited  by many colleges all over the country. He decided to go to USC who had a great history in both track and football.

College-He could not play on the varsity team in his first year of college, but as a sophomore he was a starting wide receiver for the Trojans. He held his starting spot throughout his college career. As a senior, he made the All-American team leading the Pacific eight Conference in receiving. USC went to the Rose Bowl, and Swann had five catches. In the season he had 95 catches and 1,566 yards.
NFL-Swann was heavily scouted, and the critics had nothing bad to say about him. He was drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974. In his rookie season he was made a starter just in time for the playoffs. He proved himself a very dangerous player as a wide receiver, and also a punt returner. In the playoffs he caught the pass that sent them to their first ever Super Bowl that they won
Unusual Training-Swann had an unusual, but effective training secret. This secret was ballet. It helped him increase his vertical leaping ability and balance. This allowed him to jump, catch the ball, and land on his feet. This training technique worked out for him as he caught 336 passes for 5,462 yards. He was also the most valuable player of Super Bowl Ten with the game winning catch.
