The Chicago Blackhawks have a dynasty that goes back all the way to the late 1920's.....1926-1927 to be exact.  Pete Muldoon was the first Blackhawk head coach.  Under Muldoon's tootaledge  the Blackhawk's finished third in their division and were eliminated early in the playoffs, soon after Muldoon was fired, starting a drought of 10 years or as we call it "the curse of muldoon".  After winning 5 Stanley cups in the 30's and 60's, Chicago finally made it back in the 91-92 season where they eventually would be sent home by our very own Pittsburgh penguins.

We know them as the Pittsburgh Penguins but back then they were called something a little different.  They began as Pittsburgh Pirates but only through 1925-1930.  In the mid 30's the AHL (American Hockey League) rolled into town, where they gave the name, The Pittsburgh Hornets.  1967 was the end for the Hornets, but they ended good fashion, winning the AHL regular season title and the Calder cup playoff championship.  The team was to play at the Civic arena which was nick-named "the igloo"...so now we have the Pittsburgh Penguins.  In the pens first two seasons they missed the playoffs even under the heroics of Les Binkley who posted 31 shutouts, as the pens net-minder.  Soon Red Kelley replaced Red Sullivan as the Penguins head coach, where he took the pens to the semifinals were they bowed to the powerful St. Louis Blues.  Just before the 69-70 season, the pens star forward Michel Briere was seriously injured in a car accident, but would soon die in 71.  After missing the playoffs for six straight years, the pens picked up a star rookie forward by the name of Mario Lemieux.  In Lemiuex's first season in the NHL he won the Calder and the Heart trophy.  Then in the 89-90 season Craig Patrick picked up Ron Francis in a trade with the Hartford Whalers, and also picked up Jaromir Jagr in the 1990 NHL entry draft.  Soon after they picked up "Badger" Bob Johnson in June of 1990 where they would beat the Minnesota North Stars in the Stanley Cup finals in 6 games.  Once again Penguins fans hearts were broken when Badger Bob died of a brain tumor, but following in his footstep the pens picked up Scotty Bowmen, the teams Director Of Team Development, as their head coach wher in 1992 they swept the Chigago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Finals in 4 games.  That was the begining of the pens downhill slope because the pens struggled the next few years batteling injuries and only few playoff births.
