History

The Italian language is a Romance language that is derived from Latin.  The language was spread through Sicily, Gaul (present-day France), the Iberian Peninsula (present-day Spain and Portugal), Britain, the Rhine Valley ( present-day Germany and Switzerland), and the northern shores of Africa by conquering Roman legions.

 

Grammar and Pronunciation

Vowels in Italian are pronounced like this:

a          e            i            o            u

ah        ā            ē            ō            /oo/

 

All words in Italian are either masculine or feminine.  The word used for “the” differs depending on the word and whether it’s masculine or feminine.  “il” is used before masculine nouns, but “lo” is used before the ones that start with “z” or “s” plus another consonant.  “La” is used for feminine nouns and all nouns that begin with a vowel use l’.
