There are five basic positions in basketball. A starting team consist of two guards, two forwards and a center. These positions are flexible out on the court, but most of the time, you only play one position. All five players always have different roles and responsible, but in the end every team works together to achieve their best.
The five basic positions are designated by numbers. A point guard is one, shooting guards are twos and threes, power forwards are four and Center is 5.They have them by number to make things less confusing for the announcers especially. Some announcers would only call the players by their last name and not everybody's last name is easy to pronounce.

A point guard is a guard that does the most ball handling, this guard is very important factor to any team. Even though, most point guards aren't six foot tall, they still make a majority of the teams points. His or Her duties are calling plays and directing defense. This player is usually the teams best dribbler and passer. The guard is the one usually bringing the ball up the court.
The other guard is called the shooting guard. Although, they both have similar duties, this guard would not bring the ball up. This guard is usually bigger than the point guard. The main difference between the point and the shooting guard is the shooting guard is more of a better scorer. They often have skills in the shoots beyond the key or three pointers.

The third guard is sometimes called a small forward. This player is primarily known for their ball handling and scoring abilities. These players are often versatile and can play all over the floor except the center.
The power forward, otherwise known for their size, defense, and rebounding. Most power forwards focus on defense and rebounding not so much ball handling skills. This player is a bigger player than the guards.

The biggest player on the team is called a center. The guard, and forward revolve around the guards. This position is a staple to the offense and defense.  This player has to have eye contact with the other guards in other to make plays and inbounds plays work correctly. In defense, they do more than guard the opposite center but they also block shots and rebound.
