The history of Cheerleading goes back to 1870. The first prep club started at Princeton University. In the 1880's,the first organized yell was recorded at Princeton University.The first organized cheerleading squad started in the 1890's at the University of Minnesota. The megaphone now isn't as popular, but it was popular in the 1900's. The first homecoming ever took place at the University of Illinois in 1910. In the 1920's, women cheerleaders started to put gymnastics and tumbling in the cheers that they did. In the 1930's, Universities and High schools started to do pom-pom routines during halftime and on sidelines.In the 1940's the first cheerleading equipment company was established by Lawrence R. Herkimer. It started in Dallas Texas but grew out across the nation. In the 50's, College Cheerleaders started camps and workshops to teach cheerleading skills and to help girls with tryouts. In the 1970's, the history of cheerleading had it's turning point. High school and college cheerleaders  started to cheer for wrestling, track and swimming. In the spring of '78 the first National Broadcast of the Cheerleading Championships took place. The first national competition took place in the 1980's.
