Fort McHenry was constructed between 1798 and 1802. The Fort was finished in 1802. In 1829 changes were made to Fort McHenry. Between 1846 and 1848 Fort McHenry was used to recruit and train troops for the Mexican War. After the battle of Gettysburg Fort McHenry held over 7,000 confederate prisoners. On July, 21 1912 the last Garrison of U.S. army troops left Fort McHenry. Also in 1912 George Armisteads' Family gave the Fort McHenry to the Smithsonian Institution. On March, 31 1931 the Star Spangled Banner become the National Anthem. In 1939 Fort McHenry was declared a national monument and historic shrine. | |
