Dutch settlers were the first people to bring bowling to America.  In Europe it was played with 9 pins.  Then after it arrived in America the tenth pin was added, which is the way it is still played today.  The game is played on bowling allies that are 62 feet 10 and 11/16ths inches long and between 41 and 42 inches wide.  From the foul line to the pins is 60 feet with gutters on both sides of the lanes.  The game is usually played with one ball, but bowlers sometimes use two balls, one for the strike shot and one for the spare.

Rolling the ball and knocking all the pins over on the first ball constitutes a strike.  A spare is scored when you use two balls to knock over the pins.  With enough practice you can get into an organized league. Over time you may become good enough to enter a small tournament or two.
