This is the final period of music so far. Within the modern period, there have been many types of music. Contemporary, jazz, pop, rock, rap, country, and whatever other type you can think of is placed here. As time goes on, this period of music will acquire a new name, as every other period has, because it will no longer be modern. |
| Contemporary music is odd-sounding, in my opinion. The chords do not harmonize. The time signature (which gives the number of beats per measure) changes every few bars. The melody is not pleasing and almost sounds random at times. |

There is a style of music that fits itself between the Romantic and Modern periods. It is the Impressionistic style. Like the name recommends, the music gives an impression of something, such as water. The music is normally flowing. The harmonies are also discordant, though. Impressionistic music is quite difficult to play. |
| Jazz is easily recognized by its syncopation (where the main beat does not lie on the first note of each measure). There is ragtime, with pieces like the Entertainer. There are the later types of music, too. There is rap, where the words rhyme and have no significant melody. There is pop and rock music. Drums are important in these last three types. Guitars are used a lot as well (especially electric ones). |

Some famous Contemporary composers are Stravinsky and Prokofiev. Prokofiev is famous for Peter and the Wolf. Some famous Impressionistic composers are Debussy and Ravel. Other famous Modern composers are Joplin, Copland, Gershwin, and Bernstein. Joplin composed the Entertainer. Copland composed the Appalachian Springs. Gershwin composed Rhapsody in Blue, and Bernstein created West Side Story. Ellington is a famous jazz composer. For the later styles, I think you would know more composers than me. |
