Show jumping is one of the most popular style of riding. Show jumping strengthens the horse and makes him more supple so that he makes the correct shape over the jump. In particular it helps the horse to loosen his shoulders and raise them up over the fence. At the same time arching his neck, dropping his head, and folding his forelegs up tight.

In show jumping there are many kinds of jumps. There are spreads, doubles, trembles, and water tray jumps. Water trays are either water or ditches under the jump. You and your horse should prepare for water jumps.

In show jumping your uniform is also judge in your performance. Men should wear red jackets. The chief exceptions are competitors from Eire who wear green. Woman usually wear a black jacket and either a shirt and collar, or shirt and tie.

Courses and knowing them are very important part to show jumping. Walking the course is an essential part of preparation for the ring, not only to memorize the sequence of jumps, but also to plan how to ride them. Walk the course as you will ride it, remembering that you should use as much of the ring as possible, except when you are jumping off against the clock.

Judging in show jumping is as important as cross-country and dressage. In show jumping you are judged on how many faults or rails you knock down. When you knock down a rail you are deducted points. You are also judged on time. In most cases you have a certain amount of time. If you go over you amount of time points are also deducted.

Location is a pretty big deal in show jumping. You could not have a show on cement or rocks. The best location is green grass with a big arena. Places with holes could be dangerous. Dirt or sand could work also in a big arena.
