The term
"dressage" covers all training done on the flat, and dressage
movements and exercises are used for training all horses regardless of
which area of the sport they compete in. Its aim is to produce a horse
that is strong, supple, well-developed, and obedient to its rider. |

In the ring
there are many different types of gaits you can do. There is the walk,
trot, and canter. There's also something called turn on the forehand. This
is when the horse crosses his hind legs across each other turning in a
circle. |

Clothing is a
big deal when riding dressage. In the ring at a show you must wear a tweed
or dark jacket, white shirt, light colored jodhpurs, stock or tie, long
boots, and on approval hat. |

In dressage
there are patterns that the rider and horse can do together. In the show
ring the horse and rider can trot to point F and canter to point H. There
are a lot more patterns that you can do. |

Judging can
become very intense. In dressage your judge on collective marks. There's
gaits which is freedom and regularity. Third, impulsion which is desire to
move forward, elasticity of the steps, suppleness of the back, and
engagement of the hindquarters. There's also being submission and finally
the rider. |

The final
important subject in dressage is the location of the show or practice.
They can be pretty much anywhere. The rings can be 20 by 40 or 20 by 60. |
