Gibson is another very popular guitar company.  It all started one summer afternoon in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1894.  It was started by Orville Gibson who made guitars and mandolins.  Soon orders became coming in faster.  So in October 1902 The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Company was started. In the 1940's Les Paul came to Gibson and asked to make his guitar.  They declined but in the 50's Gibson went to Les Paul to ask him to help with their new guitar.  He said yes and in 1952 Gibson introduced the Les Paul to compete with Fender's Telecaster.
