Selecting a motherboard can be rather difficult without the proper research.  The one on the right supports AMD Athlon 64 Socket 754.  This is compatible with most Athlon 64 processors  Another thing you have to ponder is its compatibility with your graphics card.  This usually isn't a problem, but if you only buy a motherboard that supports AGP 4x and you buy a top of the line graphics card, you will not get  top performing graphics.  When choosing a brand of motherboard for the first time, Gigabyte is the best buy.  All of their motherboards come with great documentation.  After that you may want to consider one from a company like EPoX.

If you've already chosen your motherboard, choosing a CPU is simple.  Just buy the fastest one that you can afford that is still compatible with your board.

If you haven't purchased a processor, then you have to pick from the two top companies.  Your choices are AMD and Intel.  AMD CPU's are arguably the best "bang for the buck" processors, but if money is no object to you then Intel is the way to go.
