System memory, or RAM, is where data is stored while the processor is working on it or it is waiting to be worked on.  Memory is important when it comes to having a fast system.  512 Mb of DDR PC3200 memory will do the job well.  If you want peak performance, get 1024 Mb of DDR 3200.

Storage is the place where data is stored for long periods of time, like while a computer is shut off.  The piece of hardware considered to be storage is known as the hard drive.  Most hard drives are ATA format.  There is only one other type of HD and that is SCSI.  These drives are intended for things like server computers and you will not have to worry about them.  Fact is that ATA drives are cheaper, available on most motherboards, and are simple to use.  An 80 Gb Hard Drive suits the needs of most anyone.  If you store lots of information on your PC, you can get a larger, more expensive one.  Hard Drives are made to about 400 Gb (this costs about $400.00).  You also have to consider RPM.  Anything slower than 7200 RPMs is too slow.  10,000 RPM is about as fast as you can buy one, but you shouldn't need one that fast.  7200 is usually fine.
