The Alligator Mississippians They swim the boarder form the southern tip of Florida to Virginia. They are no where near extinction. Alligators live on land, but they much prefer the water. They can be found in marshes, swamps, and even larger ponds. The greatest concentration of alligators is in the Everglades, which there they are known as the “King”. Alligators usually eat dead animals such as birds. An alligator can live up to a year with no food what so ever. During the cold weather they can eat as little as 5 pounds of food a day. |
| Alligators are often confused with crocodiles. Though they are related, and look very similar they do look a bit different. An alligator has a “U” shaped snout and is bigger then a crocodile. The crocodile has a more “V” shaped snout and is much smaller. | ![]() |
| How did
alligators get their name?
Well it all started when the Spanish conquerors came to Mexico.
They found the alligator around the Rio Grande, and the lizard, or as they
said “el lagarto”.
That then became in English, Alligator.
