It might seem weird, but a man invented cheerleading! Johnny Campbell, the inventor of cheerleading, created it November 12, 1898.

The first cheer that was created was, "RAY, RAY ,RAY! TIGER, TIGER, SIS, SIS! BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! AAAAHH! PRINCETON, PRINCETON, PRINCETON!" It was seen first in a college football game in 1869.

The first cheerleading squad was made up of all guys. That was Johnny Campbells idea for this. The boys squad cheered for several college games. Later on in the years it became a boys and girls Co-Ed squad.

In the 1960's cheerleading became a nation wide sport with high schools and grade schools getting involved.

In the 1970's stunts and high spirits came into play. IN the 70's the first nationally televised competition: ICF's National Collegiate cheerleading Championships on the CBS was in 1978.
In 1979 the basket toss was created. A basket toss consists of 5 girl, 1 back spot, 2 bases, 1 flyer, and 1 front spot. The flyer is tossed up and when she is high enough in the air she will do a toe touch and come back down to be caught.
In the 1990's all-star squads started to come together. All-star squads are a group of girls who try out and the girls who make it compete at competitions all over the country.
Today cheerleading is a world wide sport. From state to state there is some sort of cheerleading involved.  Usually there are tryouts for cheerleading where you go for 3 days and learn a cheer, dance, and practice any thing you need to practice. Cheerleading ranges for pre-school through college.

Cheerleaders are getting more and more talented each and every year. Stunts and tumbling are getting more advanced although there are many injuries involved there are many girls/boys that love this sport.
The history of cheerleading is quite fascinating it goes back far back into the early years if sports. Cheerleaders have high spirts which makes the sports teams more involved.
