The islands history is steeped in trade and shops. In the 1700s the island was a pirate refuge for notorious buccaneers and by the 1800s Charlotte Amalie was one of the busiest ports and trading centers in the Caribbean. Today, St. Thomas is a choice port of call among the cruise lines and a popular virgin island vacation spot. It was first discovered in 1493 when Christopher Columbus made his second trip to the Caribbean. He discovered all of the virgin islands but specifically St. Thomas.
