Gymnastics is believed to have started more than 2,000 years ago in Athens, Greece. It was even included in the Olympics. In 1811 Fredrich Jahn also know as "The Father of Gymnastics started the first club for gymnasts. In 1908 women were accepted in gymnastics and in 1912 gymnastics started to become very popular. At first, mainly people from Germany and Austria would compete, but then other countries started joining in too. In 1924 the Paris Olympic games took place and they wanted gymnasts from all over the world to come. In the 1950's Olga Korbut who was a phenomenal gymnast, charmed the audience and gymnastics became popular for girls. In the 1960's gymnastics was televised and in the 1970's there were more female gymnasts than male gymnasts. Today gymnastics plays a very important role in the Olympics and in people's lives. Many girls are really into competing and some just do it for fun, but whatever people chose to do in this fantastic sport, we owe it to the Greek. Gymnastics has come a long way! | ![]() |
