Equipment is probably the most important part of softball. It can protect you and you can't play without it.

In the old days, the bat was a broom stick and th ball was a boxing glove. Soon, it was a 14 inch hard ball. Now, it is 12 inches for fastpitch and 11 inches for slow pitch.

There are a couple different bases. Well, there are the regular bases at first, second, and third. They are in the shape of a square. There is home plate which is in the shape of a pentagon. Last, there is the pitcher's plate and it is in the shape of a rectagle.

Whenever you are batting, you need a few things. One thing you need is a bat, of course. Bats can be all different lengths weights. You should pick the one that is best for you. Second thing you need is helmet. The helmet protects your head from foul balls and when you're running. The last thing is optional and it is batting gloves. They protect your hands from the sting of the bat.

Infielders and outfielders also need a few things. First off, you need a glove. If you play first base, there is a special glove that you use. Outfielders have a deep pocket glove so that they can catch the ball easier. The catchers have a different glove and they have a whole bunch of other equipment, also. Their glove is differnt so that the ball is easier to catch and so that is doesn't hurt your hand. The other equipment that they have is a mask, chest protector, and shin guards. The mask protects them from foul balls and from getting hit in the face. The chest protector protects their chest from wild picthes and foul balls. The shin guards protect your legs from fould balls, wild pitches, and from people sliding into home.
