In
the list of all-time greatest rock bands, Led Zeppelin would have to be
one of, if not the greatest. It started when Jimmy Page broke away
from a 1960's rock band called "The Yardbirds" with bass
player John Paul Jones. They met up with drummer John "Bonzo"
Bonham and singer Robert Plant. They got their name at a party
when Keith Moon, drummer of "The Who" said that they would go
down like a lead zeppelin, referring to an ill-fated German
airship. Lead became "Led" and they stuck with it.
The quartet signed with Peter Grant, a manager with a fearsome
reputation. They soon put out great hits in the early days like
immediate success, "Stairway to Heaven," "Rock and
Roll," and "Black Dog." In the later days they put
out numbers like "Kashmir," and "All My Love."
At the height of their success, Bonzo died on Christmas Day, 1980, of
drinking. The band immediatly disbanded, but Plant and Page
performed late in the 90's through today. |
