The regulator keeps the amount of air released in track and then can send a signal to the pump when the tank needs more air. The depressor is used when the compressors power source is cut off; it uses the air in a timely manner and does not release the air to get new. Although this problem can be avoided because they sell compressors with built in batteries in case of an emergency. Most of all importance is the electronic components. Without these the whole entire compressor will not function properly. This is the part of the compressor that tells everything to release air or intake air. Without this your compressor would basically be a one way pump.

You could probably use a compressor in an old warehouse and it would work properly as long as it has the right adapters.
