HISTORY The Dachshund, more commonly known as the Wiener Dog, originated in Germany. They're three type of Dachshund. They are: the long-haired, the wired-haired and the short-haired. The Wiener Dog was bred to hunt. The types of animal they caught when hunting include the following: hare, stoat, chipmunks, and squirrels. Since they were such good hunting dogs, they spread to many countries including the United States. |

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE The Dachshund is mainly known for its exceptionally long body. That's how it got its nickname, "the Wiener Dog." It has an elongated head and short stubby legs. Their ears are usually quite long and show relation to the "floppy-eared" rabbit. It is an oddly shaped, but very cute dog. |

PERSONALITY Wiener Dogs are lively, affectionate dogs. They will take your heart with their clownish, outgoing traits. They are also pretty clever. Each type of dog carries its own certain personality. For instance, a long-haired Dachshund is calmer than the other two types. A wired-haired is wild, but can also be calm and cuddly. The short-haired is by far the most adventurous. But, all three breeds are difficult to train. |

Grooming Grooming depends on what type of Dachshund you have. A long-haired Wiener Dog should be brushed everyday and trimmed professionally four times a year. A wire-haired Dachshund should be brushed 1-2 times a week and professionally groomed two times a year. A short-haired Wiener Dog should be professionally groomed at least once a year, but you could even just do a rubdown with a damp cloth. |

LIFE SPAN A Dachshund averagely lives 12-15 years. But, because of its rather long body, spine injuries are more common which can cause risks. |
