Softball is developed from the game of baseball. Softball was first played in Chicago in the 1880's. Players used a boxing glove for a ball and a broomstick for a bat, and played an indoor version of baseball.
The game grew popular and before long a new ball and bat were introduced. The ball was larger than a baseball, and the bat had a smaller head than a baseball bat.

Initially softball was played indoors in university and college gyms. But the game soon moved outdoors onto playing fields.
Softball grew rapidly during the first and second world wars. American Servicemen played the game wherever they were stationed. They introduced softball to people all over the world.

At the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta softball became an official medal sport for the first time.
